Pellet plant Holzindustrie Kirnbauer – Highly automated pelletizing in a very small space
Holzindustrie Kirnbauer has consistently expanded its value creation with the construction of a highly automated pelletizing plant at its Ternitz site. The aim of the project was to efficiently pelletize the wood shavings produced at the site – despite the very limited space available. On just 500 m², Salmatec, as a full-service provider, implemented a fully integrated pelletizing system including automatic truck loading.
The plant processes only wood shavings from its own further processing and is designed for an annual capacity of up to 20,000 tons of wood pellets. At the heart of the pelletizing system is a Salmatec Maxima 700 pelletizing press, supplemented by complete conveyor, cooling, and conditioning technology as well as a 1,500-ton pellet silo. The existing dry chip silo was successfully integrated into the new plant concept.
A key project goal was to make the plant as autonomous as possible. Pelletizing is digitally controlled, operates largely independently, and enables 24/7 loading, including weighing, documentation, and ERP connection—all without manual effort or paper processes. From planning to foundations and buildings to assembly, commissioning, and approval support, Salmatec supplied the complete plant from a single source.
The Kirnbauer project impressively demonstrates how a high-performance, compact, and highly automated pelletizing plant can be implemented even at inner-city industrial sites with high noise, safety, and fire protection requirements.
